First of all, I'm still impressed with Karen Gurnon. I don't think I really ever talk about her. I can't say much other than that I am impressed with what she said in an interview. She sounds like a winner. I'm reiterating this.
There are a lot of other great athletes who do great things and deserve attention for their skills. However, they don't get enough respect. It's not just Meghan Cunningham who I think sports fans at UConn should know about. I hope people realize that Meghan Cunningham isn't the only athlete that I pay attention to. Based on a thing or two that I heard I'm not sure if that's the case.
Here are a list of people who do amazing things yet most UConn students don't know about them: Mike Rutt, Tynisha McMillian, Victoria Flowers, Carin Knight, Whitney Michele, Pierre LePage, Mike Olt, George Springer, Kacey Richards, JENNIFER KLEINHANS, MELISSA GONZALEZ, JILLIAN ORTEGA, Micah Truax, Julie Towers, Kathy Les, Brian Gagnon, Karl Schilling...etc. etc. I could list tons of athletes who don't receive enough respect for their hard work and results. They are forgotten about because they don't play basketball or football. I think that's a shame because it takes whole lot of effort to get to the Division I level for any sport.
I'm trying to make the point that Meghan Cunningham is far from the only athlete that doesn't get enough respect from sports fans around campus. I don't want people to have the misconception that she is the only athlete that matters to me. While obviously I'm one of only a handful of people who recognizes that what she is doing is impressive, it's not all about her. There are many other athletes who I feel are under appreciated and don't get enough respect. The fact that she plays two sports and on two highly successful teams makes what she does even more impressive to me. That is why I chose to talk about her so much to start.
More athletes that come to my mind include...
Former track star Tamara Highsmith went over the heads of way too many sports fans at UConn. I wish I could write more about her. Same goes with Shannon Burke. She was a terrific Lacrosse player at UConn. People forget that the Lacrosse program was ranked not that long ago and had several highly successful seasons. Field Hockey star Lizzy Pejis went unknown to too many UConn fans.
It's not just all about Meghan Cunningham. I am really impressed with her, but she is far from the only athlete that sports fans should know about.
And one other team that doesn't get enough respect is Field Hockey. If I understood the sport more and could have made more of their games I would be talking a lot about them too. They are consistently one of the top 4 teams at UConn every year. The only team more consistently good then they are is Women's Basketball.
