Since I used to report on women's basketball I can actually name women's basketball referees. Seriously If I saw these people in the airport I'd know who they were.
The 5 referees that I remember are Bonita Spence, Dee Kantner, Mark Zentz, Dennis DeMayo and Denise Brooks.
I promise you that you will hear their names at a game this year. Usually these referees referee the biggest games. Kantner worked the National Championship game this past year.
For the NBA you just have to know who Joe Crawford, Bennett Salvatore (He's from Stamford) Dick Bavetta and Steve Javie, are.
In the NFL you must know Ed Hochuli (Anthony Burris, from the track team, is the UConn Intramural version of Ed Hochuli) and Mike Carey...maybe Walt Coleman too.
In MLB...well you just know all of them...C.B. Bucknor, Jim Wolf, John Hirshbeck etc. etc.
Big sports fans know referees.
