Track and Field

Meghan Cunningham won the 3000 meter steeplechase today at the Sherman Complex...Looking at the clock, my guess is that she was just barely behind 2nd place all time by a UConn runner in that event. Orlaith Cunningham is 2nd in UConn history behind Jillian Sullivan who ran the steeplechase at 10:13:45 in 2007...She was also a Big East Steeplechase champion...I bet I actually saw Jillian win that in 2007 because I was there in 2007 for all the meets.

I think that the steeplechase is a crazy event. It was nice today because it was 76 degrees. That is nice weather. But I also saw it when it was 40 out and saw a girl land all the way in the water. That sucks... Meghan Cunningham is 5'10''...she has long legs...she barely got wet in the race today. Sara Leslie is short and she got a little bit more of the water.

I was speaking with one of the track officials and he was telling me that one kid got mad about running the steeple-chase so he decided to do cannon balls off of the hurdle.

Here is a video of someone else doing that.

I had a lot of fun at the Pole Vault today. I helped out operations by putting up the pole vault bar and making it stay. The wind early in the day made the job difficult...as did our shorter heights...but it worked and it was fun. I certainly can put a pole vault up in my sleep now.

Our official was telling me about how he never has seen the fiber-glass pole break in half. Well he did today, one of the Boston University girl vaulters went up and the bar snapped in half and she landed in the front part of the cushions. It was sort of scary. The girl was shaken by what happened. She was scared, but she continued.
