I don't get it

I don't know what to say, where to start or where to end on this subject. I could say so much but I think I need to think a lot before I talk about it because its so complex.

I was speaking with someone today who doesn't think that female sports will ever be good. He actually used a his hands to show the levels of one vs the other. I was shocked on some levels. Especially because he didn't think people would ever care about them.

He's older and a conservative person. My hope is that his view on female athletics is more of a generational thing than anything else. I know that people who grow up now have seen success in both male and female athletics. We have been exposed to greatness for female athletes.

It's up to the media to help fight the weak perception that many people have of female athletics. The media can do a lot to legitimize female sports.

Another thing I never understood is a guy who said that he would support his daughter if she played sports but didn't seem to care about supporting someone else's daughter. That doesn't make sense to me.

I don't understand how people celebrate male athletes for their hard work and achievements but seem to completely ignore female athletes. It's as if people think that it doesn't take the same level of preparation and practice to win in female sports that it does in male sports.

Sometimes I wonder if the fact that I work out a lot contributes to my appreciation of the hard work female athletes put in. It's not easy to put in the work. It's not always easy to motivate yourself to go for a 6 mile run or a long bike ride or to lift weights. I realize it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to play at the elite levels that they play at. They do twice as much as I do. Some of the U.S. soccer players were working out 7 months into their pregnancies and were playing games 3 weeks after giving birth. To me thats amazing.

I don't understand why people don't think that they can't see great games in female sports either. You can. I have. Some of the most dramatic games that I have seen were female sports games.

Female games are played at high levels. People try to use basketball to prove that wrong. Most females can't dunk, but they usually play a much superior game in terms of fundamentals and team work. The extra passes they make are beautiful. The game they play below the rim is phenomenal. If I wanted my men's team to play well I'd go to a Coach Auriemma practice.

I love all sports. For a long time all I cared about were the Mets and Cowboys. Now that's changed (I never thought I'd know so much about UConn women's basketball or that I'd buy a book on women's soccer) and hopefully more people will begin to realize that there are so many great things about female sports that are worth watching and supporting.
