When I watch metal bat baseball (college and high school baseball) I tend to not like the pitching. Basically the pitching can be really awful (as can the defense). Part of that has to do with the fact that metal bats make it easier to hit and harder to pitch.
I don't understand how scouts can evaluate pitchers when they pitch against metal bats. It would seem to me that it's better to evaluate them in the Cape League when they face wood bats. The problem there is that the batters aren't used to wood bats so it makes pitchers look over-powering.
So I spoke to a person in the know about scouts and pitchers.
Basically the scouts aren't really too concerned about a pitchers ability to consistently get someone out. (you can have an era of 6 and get drafted...I've seen that) Scouts are looking for a big guy who throws hard. Scouts and organizations believe that they can fix the wrongs of young pitchers.
