So I am taking a Sports in Society Class next semester and I am really looking forward to it. I looks a lot at the history of sports and how it impacts society. There will be a lot of studying about gender, race and class in sport. I will find that class very interesting.
10 years ago there was an amazing event that took place at the Rose Bowl, in the summer, in front of more than 90,000 people. It wasn't a football game, it was the 1999 Women's World Cup. I bought a book that will talk about the team, the game itself and it's impact on society. I figure it will be an interesting and good read and also will teach me a lot of useful things. I also think that this is probably the first book that I have ever bought about female's in sports. This is somewhat sad because most people think of me as someone who follows both gender's in sports...especially at UConn. (As some of the Women's Basketball players that I met at UConn go on to the WNBA I am sure I will start to follow them)
The second book I bought is about the Super Bowl. It's not about the game itself, rather it's about all the work and preparation that goes on behind the scenes to make it all work and come together. It should also talk about the economics of the game. I also can't wait to read this book.
I think that both of these books will be great reads and will also expand my knowledge on sports and society and marketing/putting an event together.
This also is the reason that I switched majors, which no doubt I will talk about as an experience from this past year. I will write about it because I am sure that I am not the only person in college who can't decide what they want to study.
I switched my major because I knew that I would be interested enough in Sports Management to WANT to learn about it beyond the classroom. I didn't want to do that with my old major. I feel that in order to truly learn you have to be actively interested and engaged in what you are learning. When you are interested and engaged it will show up in your work.
