So for some reason Sam drove me to the Men's Soccer game against Cincinnati. I often stop and talk to Sam Witryol at games because he's old, a big fan, but can't exactly see what is going on. I help him understand everything that's going on and did go on. It must have been a Volleyball or Field Hockey game that I was coming from. I told Sam that I didn't need a ride, but he insisted and who am I to argue with such a distinguished man. His name graces a street on Depot Campus, he can speak at almost all teams banquets, the rowing team named a boat after him and his name is in the school of business. As a matter of fact Sam has so much swag that he's even known by the smell of his Tobacco. If you ever enter the field house and smell that tobacco then you know that Sam is there or was there.
I was a little apprehensive about having Sam drive me anywhere. I also figured that nothing could really go wrong if he drove me from Gampel to Morrone. That's not far. Nothing went wrong, but I remember that there was all of this tobacco and tobacco smell in his car. We spoke for a little, and I thanked him for the car ride to Morrone. I also learned that he doesn't like to shake hands.
I also remember Meghan Nanfeldt driving right behind us and she saw me get out of his car. Meghan was a little perplexed. She was like "I thought that was Sam's car" I was like "yeah, he drove me to the game." What a fascinating conversation. Well that's probably the shortest one we've ever had.
The Cincinnati game was a great game, except for the Red Card that Akeem Priestley got after he scored a goal to tie the game late in the game because he took off his jersey. Then O'B scored an amazing goal late in the game to win it. Cincinnati had no idea what had hit them. I saw yet another amazing ending to a soccer game.
Speaking of soccer, I never thought I'd travel back early on a break/long weekend to see a soccer game. I did this year. I also left late to see the Fairfield Men's Soccer game. I traveled back to see the Men take on Tulsa on Labor Day weekend. It was an amazing game for two reasons. O'Brian White scored a crazy goal late in the game to secure a tie. The weather was also so beautiful. It was picturesque. The sky was red, the weather was warm. What more could you ask for?
Goal Patrol was fun. I didn't understand some of the customs though. They started shouting out completely random things at games that made no sense. They'd say "Regis Philbin" or "Minwax makes and keeps my deck beautiful." I never got that.
I also didn't particularly like the goalies from West Virginia or DePaul. I thought they were rude.
I was also so glad to take part in the Kick For Nick festivities that donated soccer balls to kids in Iraq. I made sure that I drove down to Olympia Sporting goods to pick up a soccer ball to donate. I was so happy that UConn Honored the Madaras family for their son Nick Madaras who was a soldier who was killed in Iraq. Madaras loved soccer and was from Wilton, Connecticut. He wanted the kids in Iraq to have soccer balls to use, hence the Kick for Nick initiative in his honor. The UConn event sent over 1,000 soccer balls in Nick's honor to Iraq. Considering I come from a military family, and I love sports, it was great to see both the military and sports coming together to make a difference in the world.
