I think that the Big East should give out gold gloves to the best defensive players in baseball and softball. Sometimes saving runs is just as valuable as knocking them in. Just have the coaches vote on that. I think that last years UConn softball first baseman Justyne Roy was deserving of one.
I am really impressed with the lacrosse coaches and team. They had a tough year last year but I think they will be much improved. The teams leading goal scorer, Katy Ryan, and point leader Whitney Michele will be returning. Molly O'Brien is really confident too. She told me at a football game I was working that she would be the best contestant in the history of Bob's Catch to Win. If she is so confident that she won't embarrass herself in front of 40,000 people at Rentschler field I have little doubt that she will have trouble playing well at the Sherman Complex. Too bad she can't be a contestant. I like their coaching staff too. Coach McMahon is really nice as are the assistant coaches. Asst. Coach Zwick is really young, she tried to get a student section T-shirt for basketball. The coaches seem motivated and the players seem to like their new coaches. That's a recipe for success.
Speaking of Rentschler field, the loudest place for a sporting event is not Rentschler, Gampel, Frietas, J.O. Christian, Sherman, Morrone or XL. It is the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. It may only seat like 800 people but it sounds like there are 80,000 people in there. I recently went to my first swimming and diving competition and I couldn't hear myself think. The sounds just bounce off the walls and reverberate. Add to that loud and enthusiastic swim teams and it gets really loud. No wonder the swim team had no idea how loud they were in the dorms last year.
I met swimmer Lisa Shelps at that event. She won the event even though she was injured so I thought that was cool. She also owns several UConn pool records or something like that. She's good put it that way. She is also the clumsiest person that I've ever seen. I've been around her 3 times. The first time she slipped by the pool. The second time she was able to stay on her feet. The third time she tripped going up stairs. I bet she learned how to swim by accident. Atleast she's a cool person.
My favorite interview moment ever was with Tahirah Williams. She was giving me this great answer to a question and then she just lost control when some guy tripped going up stairs.
The greatest athletic accomplishment ever done by someone in my family was done by my cousin Brian Medlin. He beat Michael Phelps in swimming. My cousin was maybe a year older but they were in the same age group. My cousin has it on tape, and at the time his time for the event was a record. Too bad he had to have shoulder surgeries and had to stop swimming.
As a side note I can barely swim...which is interesting because I've got cycling down, if I put in the work I can run...all I need is the swim before I could do a triathalon. We'll see...I hate the cold water of the Northeast!
