Big 10 conference is looking at paying for some college athletes living expenses.
Not really a big fan of this proposal...I feel like college athletics is going down a slippery slope with this. I also think most college athletes have things so much better than what they realize. They are all lucky to have been blessed with great health and also have a whole department of people available to them as resources for all their needs. I won't get into some of the legal reasons and real meaty stuff now. I don't think it would be smart to comment on that yet.
My biggest concern with this, ignoring any of the legal reasons, is the actual budgets that will be used to pay for this. Some schools have no problem being able to pay these expenses, but the overwhelming majority too. One school being able to pay for living expenses and another not being able too is a HUGE recruiting advantage. Any school that doesn't play BCS college football can't afford this.
Also, once you start paying the athletes you can't stop. I'm afraid that paying for these living expenses is an unfair burden to be placed on public universities and state budgets.
