I have been a New York Mets fan my whole life and I guess I probably will always be one. The first sporting event I ever went to was a Mets and Astros game at Shea Stadium so the Mets will always have a special place in my heart.
However, the Mets and I are separating for a little bit. I will not be glued to the television to see them play and have no interest in going to Citi Field unless someone else pays the tickets and provides the transportation. I refuse to pay to watch this Mess.
Losing bothers me, and it's sort of amazing how I am a fan of a team that's known for losing.
What I can't deal with is how the team constantly shoots itself in the foot. Sometimes I wonder why I am not their P.R. person. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong.
Just when the Mets were starting to play better and play with some passion and fire, (which is enjoyable to root for regardless of talent level) they have their owner talk badly about his players. Maybe some of what he said was true but you don't say those things as an owner.
David Wright is the teams best player and the player put out in the media. He does everything for the Mets. He is one of the best things about the organization. You don't go around and say he's not a superstar. There is no reason to say anything other than that David Wright is a great asset for the New York Mets organization.
Then you take the teams most popular player, who will be a free agent, Jose Reyes, and tell the world that he's not worth 7 years and 142 million dollars. I'd argue that almost no player is worth that, however you don't say that because it will be taken the wrong way, which it has been, and it also hurts you in negotiations should you want to keep that player. Clearly the Mets have to trade their most popular player now as irreparable harm has been done to the relationship between he and the team.
Then the dumbest comment was made about Carlos Beltran. When you are trying to trade or sell an asset in business what you don't do is say that it is worth 65-70% of what it once was. Saying that gets you 50% less in return than what you would have.
Clearly the Mets are a Mess and their owner is too, as he is part of the Bernie Madoff aftermath.
Clearly the Mets owner is frustrated and when you get frustrated you say things you don't mean, but with things as bad as they are now, and as an owner of a big New York team you have to be smart enough to lay low and not make things worse. If you have to vent, vent to a therapist, a friend, a journal, but not a journalist.
