First of all there is a reason that I am probably the most fit reporter. I don’t eat and eat and eat. I don’t report or work at games because of free food. I do eat it when I put in those long hours though. On Campus I like South Dining hall, it is the best. When I don’t eat there it’s usually because I am eating in the Union or getting something at a game. (Now you can stalk me...what an opportunity...actually a girl in high school once asked for my schedule so she could follow me around) This is my attempt to relive the experiences of some of the places where I got free food from athletics from either work or reporting.
I liked the Rentschler Field Hot Dogs. They were good. The Rent also makes good ham sandwiches before games that I work. The popcorn in the press box was good too.
Basketball is a variety of things. Sometimes I think it’s too exotic. They had tacos once. I like tacos but only my mom’s homemade soft ones. The Big East tournament in Hartford was pretty good too. They had steak at one game. Steak, chocolate chip cookies, salad and bread and butter are all I need. I like hamburgers if they have them. Cold cuts/subs at games are nice and healthy too. Grilled chicken is good too. For the LSU game on Saturday they had breakfast stuff which was great. It was a 12pm game, so even though the people arrived at 12, those of us who work or report got there much earlier. I saw French Toast sticks and an egg sandwich too. They also had chocolate chip cookies. I also love it when they have mints at games.
I absolutely loved Greensboro North Carolina’s food though. The ACC did a tremendous job there. Holy crap they had so many free candy bars. I loved it. Free candy is great. Especially a week removed from throwing up and losing about 7 pounds from a virus. Plus they had Fried Chicken and Salad. That’s one of my favorites.
UConn soccer has it perfect though. They get to the good stuff. They have the healthy fruit salad which I should eat, but don’t usually. (Believe it or not, I try to eat healthy. Now I usually get 5 things when I eat or go grocery shopping; carrots, apples, grapes, broccoli and green beans) Soccer also has mints and chocolate chip cookies. I love that food. That’s why UConn soccer is great. I was also someone’s guest for Friends of Soccer. I got some lemonade there. It was refreshing. Soccer also gave away free hot chocolate when I was a fan at a game and that was a very nice.
UConn Women’s Ice Hockey comes with pizza when you work and that wasn’t all that bad. I also was so happy that I got free pizza at a baseball game I went to last year because I forgot to eat lunch that day. But I try to avoid eating too much pizza. I do avoid soda at games that I report or work at though. I don’t drink Coca Cola, I am a Pepsi guy, but even then I don’t usually have any. I prefer Gatorade and will have that when possible. Sometimes I have Powerade because they are almost always the only available sports drink for UConn. Water is my first option though.
Let me tell you though, there is a reason why sports writers often have big guts. They eat tons of free food. Thankfully I don’t. As a matter of fact I am the exact opposite, I eat healthy and exercise.
But the best food in the entire world is SOUR MILK CAKE. You can't find that at games.
