I am hoping and praying for the best in Hawaii and for those who live there and know those who live there. It is such a beautiful place and is one of my favorite places on earth, (after New Hampshire, Florida, Lake House and Connecticut)
It is so beautiful there. I loved hiking up Diamond Head. It was such a beautiful view of Honolulu. I wish that the Pro Bowl was back to being played there.
I loved the Punch Bowl, as we looked unsuccessfully to find one of my father's relatives who died at Iwo Jima.
I love Maui. That is paradise. Parasailing there is a great view. I also went snorkeling there (before I knew how to swim...which wasn't the brightest idea).
I hope everything will be ok in Hawaii. I want to go back.
Tim,
ReplyDeleteMy side of the family lives on Maui, Oahu, and Big Island. All were in Honolulu for States in wrestling. Since they had experienced one in 1973, naturally no interest in finding out what this one could do. Within 3 hours of the sirens' inital warning, they were up-country.
The last I have heard - all are fine, and do not expect any damage in their communities or their homes.
On behalf of my family and friends, thank you for your genuine concern and the sharing of your memories.
Mrs. Dulski
PS - Check out Big Island next time. Its my personal favorite.
Well glad nothing appeared to have gone wrong. My old personal trainer was from Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get a chance to completely finish my post as I had to go somewhere. I did go to the Big Island. I loved Kona. I also appreciated Pearl Harbor because I appreciate history, especially U.S. History and many members in my family have served. I thought it was cool to stand where World War II started (Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona, and then where it ended, on the USS Missouri). Hilo wasn't as big as I thought it would be. When we went we were supposed to go on a helicopter ride over the Volcanoes but the weather wasn't good enough to let us go.
I like that the Big Island is getting bigger from all that lava that is still spilling into the ocean. I also loved standing next to a no- parking sign that was completely overrun by lava. It completely went over the entire road. We went to Volcanoes National Park but we didn't get to see much when we went.
When we went we spent the first week split between Oahu and The Big Island and then spent a week in Maui. I want to go back because that is my kind of weather and I think I would enjoy it more as I have learned to swim better and enjoy watersports a little more than before. I'd also love to go cycling in Hawaii, especially on the Big Island. I think I'd need to spend a month there to do the fishing, etc. that I want to do. I also want to try surfing one day. I almost went once but we decided against it since I was such a bad swimmer.
What I remember most about the Big Island was our ride from Hilo to Kona. We had no idea how long that ride really was. Or maybe we, and I had no idea how long we would be driving in the middle of absolutely nowhere. We had no food with us and there was this small 24 hour store off the road that we stopped at because we were so hungry. We couldn't find anywhere to eat so we settled for buying a nutritious dinner of donuts, oreo cookies, crackers and cheese and chocolate milk (atleast it wasn't soda). We may have had some candy too. It was by far the most unhealthy dinner that I have ever had.
Black Sand Beach was really cool too.
I think Maui is my favorite place of all the islands, but I loved The Big Island and Oahu. I found the Dole pineapple maze on Oahu to be fun.
Another fun thing we did was Bike Down Mount Haleakala on Maui. There were special bikes with special brakes. It was more of a forearm workout than leg workout. It was so fun to go from The top of a mountain, and really cold weather to the beach at the end of the ride. We also went through rain on the ride, which I was used too because I often did that when I would go cycling at home.
I'm glad I wrote all this. The trip was nearly 4 or 5 years ago, but it feels like yesterday and I am glad that I still remember good amounts of it and wrote about it before I forget about all that I did.
I should clarify that I went to Pearl Harbor, even though it's not on the Big Island. It is on Oahu. I'm not sure if I put that in the original post so I wrote about Pearl Harbor and some of the other things I did on all the Hawaiian Islands I went to.
ReplyDeleteYou have courage - none of us will try the ride down Haleakala!
ReplyDeleteI forwarded a photo of Nalu to Jessica. He is one of her cousins and was on Oahu for states over the weekend. He represented Kamaheha.
During the wresting finals of 2008, there were earthquakes and for 2010, tsumani! Who knows what 2011 will bring.
