Scholarships are an interesting thing.
I think a lot of people are motivated to get a scholarship. They are intrinsically motivated to see if they are good enough to get one. Once they get one they think that they now are being "controlled" and need to work to stay on scholarship. This change in how one thinks can negatively effect performance. It becomes a job to stay on scholarship and not a challenge to see if you are good enough to get one.
People don't want to have to worry about doing the necessary things to stay on scholarship, but they are willing to work hard to see if they can earn one.
I feel that freshman are often some of the most motivated college athletes. As a matter of fact "new blood" is often the most motivated because they have something to prove. It's important that college athletes have something to keep them intrinsically motivated. You need them to worry about a new challenge and goal for them to complete. It's not good for athletes to worry about doing what's necessary to stay on scholarship.
