Interesting catch

Today I caught some baby Northern Pike. I had never caught pike before, and was sort of glad I had only caught a baby one. Pike are fish that have teeth and they are not the best looking fish in the world.

http://www.ontariossunsetcountry.ca/acloserlook.cfm/id/7024

even better...a video of one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuOZu17YIqk

Hopefully they don't get that big where we are.

I also did some kayaking today. I had a goal of getting over to coves on the opposite side of our pond/lake and I did.

I also went cycling today and did something a little bit different by exploring new roads and new places rather than just going on the same roads over and over again. I found several baseball diamonds for little league that I didn't know existed. One of them looks like it hasn't been used since Bad News Bears came out.

My favorite thing about summer is going on a run, bike ride, hike, car ride, boat ride etc. and exploring new places. It's amazing what things are really close by, but that you don't know about. One thing I highly recommend is just breaking your routine and exploring.

Today was one of the days that I just decided to do that. I typically bike the same route or couple of routes every time I go so I get a feel for how fast I went and whether or not I am improving my speed or whether or not I was too slow etc. Today part of my route was blocked for construction so I just decided to make up for that by going to new places. I'm glad I did.

Finally, I believe Meghan Schnur plays for MagicJack in WPS...their roster and information is not all that good so I can't confirm, but I believe she plays with them.

Brittany Taylor has an assist so far this season.

Niki Cross has played in four games for the Boston Breakers.

Kristen Graczyk retired from WPS.

That's your update for UConn in the WPS.

The weekend

I have to say this past weekend was perfect, except for the fact that my bike wheel needs to be replaced...more on that later. I don't remember a Memorial Day Weekend like this, with weather so perfect.

The water temperature at our place was 75 degrees which was warm enough to get me in the water and waterski. I couldn't believe that I was waterskiing in May. I continued to improve on the ski's...going back and forth threw the wake much more easily. When I got up it had seemed that I just got off the skis a couple of days ago.

I also tried to wakeboard but didn't have a lot of success, but that isn't too surprising since I had never done that before and also had no instruction before I started, nor during since no one in my family knew how to do it.

I did a little bit of kayaking today. I hope to become really comfortable in the kayak. It's not like there is too much to kayaking, but I want kayaking to feel like biking to me. In other words, I'd dart between things easily and without thought. I have nothing on my Aunt, and probably never will though. I'm pretty sure she kayaked in Africa, maybe the Nile. I'm not sure I'd react well paddling with crocodiles and snakes.

I also got some reading in. In Memorial Day fashion I was reading about Patton. I learned that General Patton took part in the 1912 Olympics and came home a hero, because he placed better than expected. He was fifth in the modern Pentathlon. Interestingly Patton struggled in his best sport, shooting. He wasn't sure if he choked or if someone messed around with him.

You can predict the future

You can predict the future when you know the past. That is why history is such a valuable class.

I have picked up reading recently and usually I read sports books. However, now I am reading a book on Patton. From reading about him and other moments in history I have learned so much.

Next Step..

Meghan Cunningham qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase by having a top time at the NCAA Regionals.

I've also been watching the UConn Baseball team on webcast online. It's good quality and I am so happy to be able to watch those games. When I watched I heard that George Springer is slumping and I hope that doesn't hurt is draft stock. I also was very impressed with Dave Fischer's pitching numbers when the announcer announced what they were. He has a low ERA and the walk to inning's pitched and walk to strikeout ratios were very good.

I am mad I missed Ryan Fuller's homerun two nights ago because I was taking care of our dog for a second. I also somehow missed Billy Ferriter's great catch.

Speeding Ticket...

NASCAR driver and superstar Kyle Busch got a speeding ticket for going 128 MPH in a 45MPH zone. 83 MPH above the limit.

I've been waiting to hear news like this for a long time. I always wondered how NASCAR driver's aren't caught for speeding more often. Their profession is to drive cars as fast as possible and I would think that out of second nature they would speed behind the wheel on the roads.

So far I have avoided a getting a speeding ticket and I hope that continues.

Our dog playing soccer?

I think our dog was trying to play soccer with a tennis ball yesterday. It was funny to watch. He would go fetch a tennis ball and then kick the ball around with his paws. He saw me play soccer yesterday...maybe I was an inspiration...

Eisenhower's Speech

Maybe College Presidents, the NCAA etc. should watch President Eisenhower's farewell address warning about the consequences of a Military Industrial Complex.

With all the problems with boosters, Ohio State, College football, recruiting violations, merchandise being sold, always increasing Coaching Salaries in revenue sports, team specific facilities etc. maybe the NCAA needs to make sure there isn't an Athletic Industrial Complex getting out of hand at Universities that takes away too much from the amateur nature of college athletics.

NCAA Track

Meghan Cunningham will be running in the NCAA East Regionals this weekend. I believe she is 8th going into the event in her event of the 3,000 meter steeplechase. That's about two miles of running plus jumping over water.

Impressive First

Normally I don't say anything good about the Yankees, but I have to say that I think it's really cool that Mariano Rivera became the first pitcher to throw in 1,000 games for the same team.

I like this record because it demonstrates several great things.

One of those is loyalty. So often players leave teams (although no team can afford to pay Rivera more than the only team he's ever played with, the Yankees) in today's game. So often they demand trades or become malcontents that have to be traded.

Two is that you have to be reliable and not get the injury bug often.

Three goes with being reliable and that is that you have to be good. You don't throw in 1,000 games unless you are a really good pitcher.

The New York Mess

I have been a New York Mets fan my whole life and I guess I probably will always be one. The first sporting event I ever went to was a Mets and Astros game at Shea Stadium so the Mets will always have a special place in my heart.

However, the Mets and I are separating for a little bit. I will not be glued to the television to see them play and have no interest in going to Citi Field unless someone else pays the tickets and provides the transportation. I refuse to pay to watch this Mess.

Losing bothers me, and it's sort of amazing how I am a fan of a team that's known for losing.

What I can't deal with is how the team constantly shoots itself in the foot. Sometimes I wonder why I am not their P.R. person. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong.

Just when the Mets were starting to play better and play with some passion and fire, (which is enjoyable to root for regardless of talent level) they have their owner talk badly about his players. Maybe some of what he said was true but you don't say those things as an owner.

David Wright is the teams best player and the player put out in the media. He does everything for the Mets. He is one of the best things about the organization. You don't go around and say he's not a superstar. There is no reason to say anything other than that David Wright is a great asset for the New York Mets organization.

Then you take the teams most popular player, who will be a free agent, Jose Reyes, and tell the world that he's not worth 7 years and 142 million dollars. I'd argue that almost no player is worth that, however you don't say that because it will be taken the wrong way, which it has been, and it also hurts you in negotiations should you want to keep that player. Clearly the Mets have to trade their most popular player now as irreparable harm has been done to the relationship between he and the team.

Then the dumbest comment was made about Carlos Beltran. When you are trying to trade or sell an asset in business what you don't do is say that it is worth 65-70% of what it once was. Saying that gets you 50% less in return than what you would have.

Clearly the Mets are a Mess and their owner is too, as he is part of the Bernie Madoff aftermath.

Clearly the Mets owner is frustrated and when you get frustrated you say things you don't mean, but with things as bad as they are now, and as an owner of a big New York team you have to be smart enough to lay low and not make things worse. If you have to vent, vent to a therapist, a friend, a journal, but not a journalist.

Nice start for Ravens/My thoughts on Improvement

I saw that the Rochester Ravens picked up a win in their first game. I will be rooting for them in their next two games despite the players on the other team that they will be playing. As always I root for goalies, even over players in my major.

Anyway I think it's much harder than people realize for new teams to win. Usually expansion teams struggle their first few years and have a culture of losing based on the fact that they haven't had time to develop players, to acquire players etc. Look at the Houston Texans who still haven't made the NFL playoffs. Look at the Charlotte Bobcats and their transition to the NBA. The Rays were controlled by the Devil until Devil was taken out of their name.

It's not easy to join a league and all of a sudden win. It happens, but it's rare. What's important is that teams make progress and that everyday they improve. Too often people just worry about outcomes. The process and the process of continuous improvement is what leads to greatness. By winning their first game of the season and beating a team that went 7-2-3 last season the Ravens are making progress, and that's all that matters.

To me one of the best examples of a franchises rise to greatness is the Dallas Cowboys under Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones. Every year the team got better and better after a 1-15 first season. Then they got to 7-9 in 1990. In 1991 they made the next step by making it to the playoffs before their breakout year of 1992 in which they won the Super Bowl 52-17 (and if Leon Lett was a little bit faster 59-17)

Small progress everyday is what leads to improvement. It's often hard for people to realize how small actions each and every day build up over time.

I'm not here to predict the W-League season or standings, but what I am saying is that the Ravens are certainly making progress and that should give them confidence that they are doing something right and should keep doing what they are doing.

While I am on the subject of improvement, I will say that I think the most important award that someone can get is the Most Improved Player Award. I believe that this award is so important and so valuable because it takes personal sacrifice to earn that award. You truly have to work hard to earn that award. To me if you are improving and are constantly trying to do so you are being the ultimate teammate because continuous improvement shows that you care about yourself and adding more to the team.

If you are trying to improve than mistakes don't matter. Mistakes can be discouraging but you have to take them in stride and not worry about them. If you are constantly improving then mistakes are just part of the learning process. Because you are working hard to improve you will eventually eliminate mistakes. Mistakes only become a problem when you no longer care to fix them in the future.

I think that the ultimate goal for every athlete each season in terms of winning a personal award (not a team award that all athletes strive for, like a championship) is to be the Team's Most Improved Player and Team's Most Valuable Player. You always want to strive to be the best, and the best always strive to improve and be better. The MVP award is nice, cool and important, but to me it would be much more special to win that award if I also won the most improved award. I would take the most pride in giving out or receiving the most improved award.

You have to respect most improved players for all of the sacrifices that they have put in to improve themselves.

I got really mad today

I love to exercise and try to everyday. I'm happy to say in the summer I have been able to bike and run everyday. I also enjoy wood splitting.

And actually that last sentence is not a joke.

Whenever we have a tree taken down I make sure that we keep the wood so I can split it for the fireplace.

I used to hate running but I'm getting used to it.

I LOVE to CYCLE. I'd venture to say that if I don't get a chance to bike that I don't feel like I have had a good day.

However, I refuse to ride my road bike in the rain because of the damage that can be done from water getting into gears and rusting parts, to it getting sand and grit stuck in the chains etc. The brakes also don't work that well in rain. I will often plan my day around a bike ride that will occur when it will not rain.

Today I thought I was going to be able to avoid the rain, but I failed miserably at that and I got really really mad at about anything and everything on that ride. It was funny looking back at it.

When I am on my bike I'm in a whole other world. I turn into any male athlete who is competing in a big game. My testosterone is flowing, I say crazy things, and feel like I can do anything including cursing out the weatherman and mother nature for making it rain on my ride.

It's pretty funny how stupid I can sound on my bike.

At the same time my bike is when I become a genius too. Some of my best ideas happen when I am biking and have a clear mind.

I swear I've actually written papers in my mind while on the bike.

Good WPS attendance numbers

I mentioned some really low WPS attendance numbers earlier, but the last two games have had great numbers of over 6,000 fans for a Boston Breakers game and over 8,000 for a Western New York game. Numbers like that are encouraging.

ESPN wants it....

I can tell that ESPN really wants the Indianapolis 500 to get good ratings. There has been so much programming and commercials geared to the event. There has been constant reminders during sportscenter for the event and they also did a feature on driver Dario Franchitti. I haven't noticed as much build up to the event in past years.

I think it's a good thing that there is a lot of build up to the event because the Indianapolis has always been a premiere Sporting Event. It's an event that is on par with the Daytona 500, Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, World Series and the Masters. I think it actually has more tradition then events like the NBA and NHL Finals, but the event has not received as much press and mainstream media as in years past. I'm glad it is getting treated a little bit more like an important event.

I'm confused

I turned on ESPN2 yesterday morning and saw Rugby and I had absolutely no clue what was going on. I was so confused. The only thing I understood was that if you kicked the ball through two posts you got 6 points. Other than that, wow, was I confused.

Fishing

I went fishing today and caught nothing for the 8 Millionth time with my NEWEST Pole. As a matter of fact I have caught 0 fish with this pole in a three years of use. I don't use it everyday...but still you would think I'd catch something. I've changed hooks, I've changed baits but still nothing.

My goals for the summer include catching a fish with this pole and breaking whatever curse is on it. (I've caught fish using other poles) Others include learning how to iron and be able to tie a tie more efficiently.

Best part of being in the middle of nowhere

I've determined that there are three reasons that it's really nice to be in the middle of nowhere.

One is that you never have to worry about finding a bathroom because the woods are everywhere. If you have a lot to drink you won't have to worry about your bladder exploding.

I don't know why I wrote that first one.

Two is that it's peaceful and tranquil which is so nice.

Three is that you have some local mom and pop places that take care of you and make you feel welcome. For example the place I went to get my bike taken care of today was a shop out of a guys garage. Nice guy, was able to stop in without and appointment and get taken care of right away and for free. Plus he was a good conversationalist.

It's nice not being in the middle of everything, and having spent a lot of time away from Stamford and in the slower paced Storrs and Ashburnham I've begun to really appreciate how much nice life is without having to sit in traffic, or having bad drivers cutting people off.

Every year we go through this...

More Lance Armstrong accusations...

Do they surprise me?
No

Do I think Armstrong took drugs???
Yes...or he did a lot of cold tubbing...

Do I know for sure?
No

Do I want to?
No

Some stories are so good and inspiring that maybe it's just best if we leave the truth alone because as we all know often times the truth hurts.

My first Christmas

I was watching some home movies today and I found out that my first present that was over opened for me on Christmas Day was an inflatable baseball bat and ball.

Guess that's where my sports obsession started.

Sort of impressed

I would be impressed if I followed more W-League and WPSL teams. Frankly I only follow a few and only go to a few of the teams websites. In general I am impressed with the Rochester Ravens organization. Just by following them on twitter I have been linked to a few interesting things that impress me.

The only W-League game I have been too was played on a foot of grass and didn't have the feel of anything other than a high school game.

The Ravens seem to do things like a college program or WPS team would. I don't know how many W-League teams have kick-off dinners. The person behind these ideas or work seems to be well qualified to work in the professional league or at college level.

One observation that I'd also make is that I think that college women's soccer players at the top 30 teams in the country have better resources, and staff than the professional players have.

Errors Breed Errors

I am always amazed how errors in baseball breed more errors in baseball. I just saw the Blue Jays and Rays highlight and just saw how one bad play just caused another. The right fielder threw the ball and it accidentally hit off second base and deflected to the pitcher. The pitcher rushed his throw to second to get an out and predictably the ball went into the outfield.

Like my little league coaches said...JUST HOLD THE BALL.

Don't make things worse!

Some Division II benefits

So I got to know a Division II athlete who also played in Division I and asked them about some of the differences between Division's and how they were treated.

Some highlights...

Two trainers for 16 teams
No marketing department, No posters
No post game meals
Most road trips were day trips, and when they got meal money it was about half of what it was that she got at Division II
No team banquet, just one for the whole athletic department
Less gear
Less coaches
Gifts were rare

Paying College Student Athletes Living Expenses???

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6564134

Big 10 conference is looking at paying for some college athletes living expenses.

Not really a big fan of this proposal...I feel like college athletics is going down a slippery slope with this. I also think most college athletes have things so much better than what they realize. They are all lucky to have been blessed with great health and also have a whole department of people available to them as resources for all their needs. I won't get into some of the legal reasons and real meaty stuff now. I don't think it would be smart to comment on that yet.

My biggest concern with this, ignoring any of the legal reasons, is the actual budgets that will be used to pay for this. Some schools have no problem being able to pay these expenses, but the overwhelming majority too. One school being able to pay for living expenses and another not being able too is a HUGE recruiting advantage. Any school that doesn't play BCS college football can't afford this.

Also, once you start paying the athletes you can't stop. I'm afraid that paying for these living expenses is an unfair burden to be placed on public universities and state budgets.

Some Chris Farley...because I feel old

One of the things that I have learned from interacting with all of the players on our team, especially the freshmen who sat behind me on the bus, is that there are just some references that they don't get.

This years incoming freshman will have been born in 1993...which means they were about two or three when Chris Farley died. I love Saturday Night Live, and as I have found out on you tube, really like Chris Farley.

What Does It Take too...

What does it take to make a highlight video?

I would not calling making highlight video's a specialty of mine, but I am improving and I can share with people some idea of what goes into making them.

I am pretty sure that as a general rule each minute or two of video takes an hour or two of editing. I heard that said somewhere by somebody, and it sounds about right.

The first step to making a video is to get the video from the camera to the computer. I am pretty sure that there is an easier way to do this with better technology, but the technology that I am provided to use requires a more time consuming process. You have to log into a program, and play the tape on the camera while hitting capture on the computer. So basically you have to wait until the footage is replayed on to a computer before you can do anything with it.

Sometimes I re-edit film that I already have on my computer from previous videos and that makes allows me to avoid that first step, which is always nice.

Once you have the video you can begin editing.

I start the video one of two ways. One way, and these are usually shorter videos, but not always, starts with a theme in my head. I know the song that I want used, I know the clips and then I just have to put it together.

The other way is the way I usually do things and it requires me to first edit all of the video. I watch everything that I need to edit and cut it up so I have all the parts I want. This takes a while.

Once I have all the clips I want I try to match it to a song. The song is a really important part. Having the song always comes before I finalize editing the film. Picking a song can honestly take forever. Sometimes it's quick and easy and sometimes it can take an hour.

After I have the music I can then fit the video to the music which depending on the film and song can be easy or a pain. In order to fit music and video I look for parts of the video that match-up well with a lyric or a beat. Sometimes I slow down video for a slower song, sometimes I cut the highlights quickly for faster songs.

I enjoy making highlight videos most of the time...every once in awhile it feels like a chore, but in general I enjoy making them. I'm no expert at making them, but I am improving.

I guess someone read this...

So a long time ago I wrote about a certain athlete and compared her hair to a telephone pole and maybe even Marge Simpson's hair.

This year I found out that she read that and called me a jerk for saying it. Although, when she said jerk to me, she meant it in the friendly kidding around way, but I thought I should share that. At the time I had no idea anyone was reading it.

I have no idea what my reaction would be to someone else writing on the internet about my hair style, or in my case, with a buzz cut, lack of style. I wonder what I would do

UFL?

I never thought I'd even write the letters UFL in this blog but now I have a reason too.

I found out that Jerry Glanville is the head coach of the Hartford Colonials and I must say that actually might give me a reason to pay a minuscule amount of attention to the league and team.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDbFT5nW7oU

Can't explain why I am a Jerry Glanville fan, but I am.

I LOVE INTERLEAGUE PLAY

Interleague play is about to begin in baseball and I look forward to it every season. Many others don't like it.

Others complain that it takes away from the Division Play that is supposed to really determine who the best teams are. I don't understand why people want MORE DIVISIONAL play in baseball. 19 games against the same team each season is not enough?

Do we need to end interleague play so we can 23 match-ups between the Nationals and Marlins a season? Royals and Indians? Diamondbacks and Rockies?

I get pretty bored of watching the Mets to begin with and it gets more boring playing the same freaking team a week after they last played. I look forward to watching the Mets playing teams and players that I don't see them play that often. It spices things up. The Cubs get to go back to Fenway for the first time since the 1918 World Series. That's pretty cool, and I got news for you, it's better than another Cubs-Reds series or Red Sox-Orioles series.

To be honest when I look for Mets tickets on a single-game basis I try hard to avoid match-ups against Division foes, (I probably wouldn't pay to watch the Mets play the Nationals) unless it's the first place team in the division. In other words more meaningless games against the bottom half of the division is as MEANINGLESS as a college head coaches contract.

I even get tired of the Yankees and Red Sox games after awhile. They are nice, but too often it feels like they are ALWAYS playing each other. Yankees vs Red Sox often feels a lot less like Ali vs Frazier and more like two kids sitting next to each other on a road trip and poking each other.

I like it when the Yankees and Red Sox play on Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend and in September. One more series thrown in there is nice, but more than that feels like overkill, especially since they always play 4 hour games.

I just want to say I am so thankful interleague play is here to keep things interesting in baseball.

Better News

So good news for WPS is that they had a 6,125 attendance figure recently, which is good news. That was for the Atlanta Beat and was a television game. The Kennesaw State University field is a really nice facility from what I have seen from television and I think the league has made progress in the fact that they have teams playing in soccer specific facilities, and fields without football lines.

From my understanding Rochester, Atlanta, MagicJack and Sky Blue all play on fields without football lines. It's a small thing, but I think it makes a huge difference on how the game looks.

I also said that I thought the WPS should have taken a year off, but to be fair it's possible that the league's stars are not as valuable to the teams as people might think. Some sports are more star driven then others. The NBA without LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or Michael Jordan is a big deal. If fans attachment points are teams and not players it might be wise for the WPS to keep playing while the sport gets attention from the World Cup.

I would still say, and recommend that women's soccer fans, of any level, watch or consume the product in some form this summer. This is a crucial summer for the sport.

Updated while I've been at UConn...

While I've been to UConn I have seen 3 National Championships...Pretty Good ehh?

Women's Basketball 2009, 2010 & Men's Basketball 2011
Six Final Fours for Basketball ...Women 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and Men 2009, 2011

Football BCS Birth

Big East Championships in:

Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field
Women's Indoor Track and Field
Women's Basketball
Men's Basketball
Men's Soccer
Football
Baseball
Field Hockey

All Together they have won 27 Big East Championships.

All of these teams advanced to NCAA's along with individuals on the track teams...
Women's Soccer also went to the NCAA's

UConn has also produced first round draft picks in:
NBA from Men's Basketball
WNBA from Women's Basketball
NFL from Football
WPS from Women's Soccer
MLS from Men's Soccer
and soon MLB from Baseball

That's pretty good

Does it get any more unoriginal?

From 1880-1882 there was a professional baseball team named the Worcester Worcesters.

Creativity was not a strong point of their team.

I have to admit, I'd have a hard time coming up with a mascot for a team...and it's actually quite important for marketing reasons. Try selling a team called the Worcesters, or the UConn UConners.

0-0

So first WPSL game that I followed was a 0-0 tie between the New England Mutiny and Soccerplus CT.

This is a game I would have loved to have gone too since I know a lot of the players who would be playing. Thankfully I didn't miss ANYTHING. I'm glad the players didn't do anything to make me feel guilty about not going.

Never seen that before...

I watched Blackburn and Manchester United play this morning. At the end of the game it was tied 1-1 and neither team cared if they won so they just knocked the ball around for the last 5-8 minutes of the game. No one pressured the ball, they just walked and passed with each other leisurely.

I also went to Borders today, the one that until tomorrow is five minutes from my house. I've just started to get into reading (I enjoy reading about SPORTS, and US History, humor and biographies) so it sucks that the Borders I usually go to (even though I'm almost never in Stamford, I almost always found myself there the past several times I've been around) is closing. My mom told me that everything was 70-90% off so I went to check out what was there and buy quite a few books. I expected that some of the things I would buy would be available. Instead almost all that was left to buy were ceiling tiles. I had never been to a book store, or any store that was so empty before. THERE WERE NO SPORTS BOOKS LEFT!!! NOT ONE. I was sad. I found some history books, although there weren't many of those either. I thought about buying a book on Custer and another on Okinawa, but I didn't want either of them badly enough to spend money on them and wait in a long line to buy them.

Cold Tubbing Is Amazing

There are a lot of things that athletes do that are difficult and hard. There are a lot of things that they do that others would never do. For a while I thought that 8 mile runs, 5am workouts, and working out until you throw up were the most difficult things that athletes do. However, I was as wrong about that as the Mets were about winning with Roberto Alomar, Mo Vaughn and Jeromy Burnitz.

Cold tubbing is by far the hardest thing that athletes do.

Since I workout a good deal. (For example last week I went on a 30 mile bike ride and 30 minute run in the same day...and the next day went on an hour long bike ride and jogged 8 miles and hiked a mountain.) While I am no Jack Lalanne, I think I workout pretty hard.

What I am so bad at is recovering from those workouts, because I feel really guilty about taking off days. I imagine if I do, than elite athletes must feel even worse about taking a day off. They have a lot of things pressuring them to be on top of their game.

One way to recover is to Cold Tub.

Basically you put your legs in COLD, COLD, COLD water. So cold it feels like a person was teleported from an oven to the artic circle. I should have a small idea of what this feels like, since I have recently started doing my own version of cold tubbing.

I'm too lazy, and not dedicated enough, to put ice into the bath water. However, I will put the coldest water possible into the tub. I've also been able to go in my lake water recently since the water has been so cold.

No matter where I go there is one constant, IT'S COLD and I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE SCREAMING curse words. After awhile your legs get pretty numb and you get used to the water temperature.

And right after you get out of the tub you can't feel your legs, which is a great thing since they are usually so sore and tired.

The next day my legs feel so much better and not sore and therefore workouts are better and more fun.

For example after working out for a week straight I was able to have an amazing, long bike ride the day after I cold tubbed. I felt awesome and since then I have been a believer in cold tubbing, even if it's so cold that it makes me want to uncontrollably curse.

So when in doubt, and if you feel sore, cold tub. Trust me, the pain is worth the gain.

Oh lord

My recent post about WPS problems may have just gotten worse based on what I read on the team called MagicJack...

The owner sits on the bench as an assistant coach...team doesn't follow league policies...The team doesn't even have an up to date website...can't buy tickets online...

The owner thinks that the media is HURTING the league, because this owner, who apparently doesn't put up sponsor field boards, isn't???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Good lord...no Press Box at their field either?

Not good...

Women's Soccer NT Roster and some bad news on finances???

I was a little disappointed that neither Brittany Taylor nor Meghan Schnur made the National Team roster. If we don't win the World Cup we will know why.

Anyway, I hate to be negative, but sometimes you also have to be realistic, which gets to my next bit of writing on the business of Women's Pro Soccer...

Speaking of Women's Soccer I can't for the life of me understand why the WPS is going to play through the World Cup. The league has had several teams fold, and while that is normal when a league is starting up, it's happened a little too much and to too many good teams. Let's just say it's not good when the leagues offices were in Los Angeles and than had most teams West of the Adirondacks, and all west of the Mississippi River, fold.

A struggling league could have used a year off, without "canceling" the league. With the Women's World Cup coming up chances are that people will be oversaturated with women's soccer. There isn't a lot of demand for the sport so why create more demand by playing games when the games premier event takes place. On top of this the league is losing it's stars to the World Cup. The league lacks star power. Playing with even less star players for a month will only hurt the league. They will lose more money with even LESS reasons to attend games.

I think the hope is that the World Cup brings an attendance boost after the cup is over and players return to their teams. That should happen, but I don't think it will happen to the point that it will make up for months of games between non world cup players. I think taking time a year off for the cup would have been the smart decision. The league would still welcome back players, but just next season. It would also give the league another year to reorganize their operations and figure things out.

So far things look depressing for women's soccer fans. Only two games have had 4,000 people or more. One game had less than 1,000 fans. Another had just over 950 fans. UCONN's home games against Notre Dame and Penn State outdrew three of the twelve WPS games this season...the game against Notre Dame was only three people short of having the same number as a fourth WPS game.. UCONN vs Providence outdrew two games. I hate saying this but numbers that low make no financial sense to me.

Player salaries, front office salaries, referee salaries, coaches salaries plus overhead, marketing costs, field costs, security costs etc. seems to be a lot more than the $20 of revenue (an estimate..pure guess..of ticket cost, food, concessions, parking) per person that attends.

If you like the sport, you have to get to pro games this year, or atleast watch the games on Fox Soccer Channel. Eventually there can be a league. I want to do some research to see how many pro leagues there were before MLB, the NFL, MLS and the NBA took off. I have a feeling that the WUSA and WPS will have similar fates.

I wish the league took a year off. I just think it would have helped it out so much.

W-League/WPSL

My favorite part of the W-League games and WPSL games that I will get to and watch over the summer (however many that is) is that I will actually be able to watch the game.

It's a nice change of pace to show up to the field and not have to do anything. It's nice to be able to focus on the game and not on filming, the bus, food, and whatever else I need to think about. I enjoy what I do, but in the process of taking care of my responsibilities and I don't get to actually "watch the games." I'm there, I usually know the score and who scored because I film, but I never get to really watch the game in the way most people think of watching it.

For the most part I have no idea what is going on and that's actually the sign that I did my job. The less I know about the game, the better job I know I did.

I'm Back

Well I have to admit it's really hard to put much effort into writing this blog when I am in school and busy with all sorts of different things. It's also probably good that I don't write while I work so I don't say anything stupid or that I'm not supposed too.

Somehow I doubt many people read this since I've been so sporadic, which really isn't the hallmark of a great blog.

Anyway, with summer here I should have some more time to write.
