Why I don't report

So I used to report on women's basketball. It was fun while I did it, but in the end I discovered that I have no interest in being a reporter...ever...I don't want to be a columnist either.

What reporters do is very important. They are essential to sports, an industry that is driven by the media and advertisers. If there were no reporters and interest in sports there would be no money in sports.

However I don't like being a sports reporter. I don't like being the person who finds the problems. I'd rather help solve them. I'm not interested in calling people out in a column. I don't really have the personality to do that. I don't want to write a story about someone to start a controversy and sell papers.

My biggest problem of all is that I am not objective. I want my teams to win, whether it be the ones I work for, or the ones I root for. I am too highly identified with my teams to be able to write about sports without a bias.

I also believe that in order to work in sports that you do need to be some sort a fan of the team you work for. Not too much of a fan that you aren't willing to miss games and plays because of work, but enough of a fan to be willing to do whatever work is necessary to help your team be successful. For example I don't know how a Red Sox fan could end up working for the Yankees one day. It would be hard for a Red Sox fan to put in 100% to watch the team they work for destroy the team they love. I hope I can get that balance right. You have to remain professional, but you also have to want the team you work for to win. I think I am doing a good job at it. The great thing about sports is that you see what your work produces after every game. A win or a loss, happy or mad fans etc... I think you have to like your team enough that you want to show it off for everyone else to see and enjoy.

By the end of reporting I was also getting really bored. I heard the same questions being asked after every game and heard the same answers everytime. I knew exactly what everyone was going to say. It became way too predictable and way too boring.

I do like to talk about sports, and I like the communcations aspect of sports. I don't like reporting.

I'd rather be a sports information director. I love to do research on sports. I also like talking about my team. Therefore writing a press release about my team, or the team I work for is much more interesting for me. I'd rather be the person who comes up with the information for the writers to write about.

I have no interest in being a sports reporter. I just thought I should clear that up. There is a reason that I am a sports management major and not a journalism one.
