I was thinking about two athletes that I seem to never write about.
One would be M.E. Lapham, who was a lot of fun to watch for the lacrosse team. Seemed aggressive and confident to me. She had an outstanding freshman year and she should score many goals in the years to come at UConn.
Another would be Elise Fugowski. I am pretty sure the first goal I saw scored at a women's soccer game was by her. I seem to remember Both her and Brittany Tegeler playing well at the games I saw at Morrone.
I also thought that Mike Nemeth was solid for the baseball team. He quietly hit .346 and he lead the team with 22 doubles and tied for the lead on the team with hits at 80. I also think of him as a pretty solid fielder too.
Pierre LePage also bounced back big time. I remember him struggling at the beginning of the year, yet he tied for the lead with hits at 80 and also hit .340. About a third of the way into the season he was hitting .204.
Nick Ahmed also had a pretty solid freshman year.
If the baseball team could have avoided the injury bug it's pretty conceivable that the team could have ended up with 40 wins.
I believe that Mike Rutt finished 6th in his 800 meter run at the US Track and Field meet. He can run two laps on an outdoor track in 1 minute and 47 and half seconds.
Also one other thing, I noticed that some field hockey players have been playing on the National Teams including Melissa Gonzalez and Rayell Heistand. Remember this when field hockey plays this year. They are by far one of the best programs in the country in field hockey and are one of only four teams at UConn to have won a National Championship. A National Championship is something that they routinely compete for. They are one of only 3 teams to be coached by someone who is in their sports National Hall of Fame. They also do not get enough fan support. If you happen to be walking by their games at the Sherman Complex just stop by and watch for 10-15 minutes. You'd be watching some of the best field hockey in the country.
Lastly, I saw the last quarter of a WNBA game yesterday. I watched two former UConn players, Charde Houston and Renee Montgomery, help lead the Minnesota Lynx to a victory. Their team is in first place so far this season. Houston played well and also had a segment on television where she took a camera for ESPN and recorded the teams trip. Renee Montgomery knocked down a three pointer. It was nothing but net. It was really weird seeing them in a uniform other than UConn.
