I feel that the worst positions in sports would be goalkeepers and place kickers. No two positions seem to come with more blame than those two. If a team scores a lot of goals against a goalkeeper it's automically assumed to be the goalkeepers fault even if an opponent gets a tons of open shots from close range on them. Same goes for a team that loses a close game because of a missed field goal. No one talks about the third and three that the offense couldn't convert.
You have to have tough skin to play that position. I feel bad for the amount of blame that people automatically put on people in those positions. Coaches face similar peril as do baseball pitchers. If my team gives up 6 runs I assume they were all the starting pitchers fault. In reality they all could have been unearned runs.

In other words, blaming the one (keeper for failing to save) is easier than blaming the group (players on the pitch for failing to convert the ball).
I guess you could say that. Just in all sports there are certain positions that get blamed when things go wrong.
ReplyDeleteNo ever blames a lineman for missing his block, they blame the quarterback for not throwing the ball away. Certain positions just come with more pressure.
Looking forward to seeing you at the home games.
